Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce member Crown Castle recently hosted a panel discussion at 1871 centering on the “5G Revolution.” The event was part-two of Crown Castle’s Tomorrow’s Chicago Today panel series, which explores Chicago’s future as a smart city and global tech hub through the lens of communications infrastructure. Panelists included:

  • Fahd Sirohey, Crown Castle Director of Implementation, Central Area
  • Denise Linn Riedl, Manager of Ecosystem Development, City Tech Collaborative
  • Dr. Sharief Oteafy, Assistant Professor of Telecommunications, School of Computing, DePaul University
  • Renee Morales (Moderator), Public Affairs Manager, Central Region, Crown Castle

The panel began with a short discussion on the basics of 5G, including an overview of small cell technology, which will ultimately comprise the backbone of the next generation wireless network. Panelists then explored the broader benefits and implications of 5G right here in Chicago, as well as on a national/global stage. This aspect of the conversation was really a deep dive into all 5G might enable, including the ecosystem of connected objects. The dialogue then concluded with each panelist sharing their thoughts on what 5G may look like 5, 10 and 20 years down the road.

Crown Castle would like thanks everyone who attended and participated in the conversation. The next panel discussion will take place March 21, focusing specifically on 5G and the smart city transformation. Please keep an eye out for details in the coming weeks.
