“We are sorry to see the Chicago City Council vote for a minimum wage increase that sets Chicago apart from the rest of the state of Illinois.”

Neighborhoods that border suburban municipalities will be placed at a distinct disadvantage now that businesses will be required to pay a higher wage than those just across the street. Together with the Illinois Hotel and Lodging Association, the Illinois Restaurant Association and the Illinois Retail Merchants Association, we urged the City Council to be more thoughtful and deliberative with regard to the impact on small businesses in Chicago.

Unfortunately by a vote of 44 to 5, the City Council voted to raise the minimum wage to $13-an-hour by 2019, burdening Chicago businesses with a 57 percent hike. Now, we may all feel the consequences of a patchwork wage quilt pitting Chicago against the rest of Illinois.”
