It may have been a bit under the radar, but Chamber member Northern Trust added 250 workers in Chicago and 600 globally in 2013. Even more impressive, the large bank did this while Chicago area banking jobs fell as a whole last year.

From Crain’s Chicago Business:

More than 40 percent of these positions came in the metro area, where Northern's headcount totaled 6,799 at year-end, an all-time high. Meanwhile, Chicago-area banking jobs as a whole fell more than 3 percent to 82,600 from 85,500, according to the Illinois Department of Employment Security.

The hiring largely supported Northern Trust's growing business of administering assets for large investment funds, as well as new federal stress testing burdens to which the bank is subject for the first time this year.

The Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce will continue to support its members and encourage Chicago’s business community to create jobs and foster economic development.
