Hiring Our Heroes

About "Hiring our Heroes"

In March of 2011, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce launched its Hiring our Heroes program, a year-long nationwide effort to help veterans and their spouses find meaningful employment. The Chamber started the program in partnership with the Department of Labor Veterans Employment and Training Service (DOL VETS), to improve public-private sector coordination in local communities, where veterans and their families are returning every day.

1000 Hiring Fairs for Veterans and Military Spouses

In the coming year, the Chamber will host 100 hiring fairs with local chambers of commerce across the country. The first of these hiring fairs took place in Chicago on March 24, 2011 and was a huge success with 127 employers and 1,200 veterans and military spouses participating. Over 200 of them got jobs. We have also created a system to track job placements—an area where our nation has fallen woefully short in the past.

Women Veterans and Military Spouses

The Chamber will work with partners to help employ women veterans and military spouses. This includes collaborating with the White House on its Joining Forces initiative and by connecting the business community with DoD on nationwide efforts to employ active duty spouses in the private sector. Through our network of American Chambers of Commerce abroad and global companies, we also hope to place military spouses in jobs overseas.

Future Vision

The U.S. Chamber is the world’s largest business federation representing the interests of 3 million members of every size, sector, and region. We have the resources to bring all industries and different types of companies to the table to help a significant number of the one million veterans in America find meaningful employment. We already have established relationships with dozens of nationwide companies that represent all sectors and industries and millions of job opportunities.

Every November, the Chamber hosts an annual event recognizing companies that have gone above and beyond to support our nation’s veterans and their families. At this year’s event, Chamber President and CEO Tom Donohue will present four awards: one to the company that has been a leader on private sector employment for veterans and spouses during 2011; one to the company that has most helped our Wounded Warriors’ transition to civilian employment; one to the company that has most supported student veterans; and one to the company with the best programs for women veterans and military spouses. These awards will bring national attention to all of our programs.

We have an aggressive agenda with the only measure of success being jobs for veterans and military spouses. We are committed to this important effort.
