Hiring Our Heroes

100 Hiring Fairs for Veterans and Military Spouses

In the coming year, the Chamber will host 100 hiring fairs with local chambers of commerce across the country. The first of these hiring fairs took place in Chicago on March 24, 2011 and was a huge success with 127 employers and 1,200 veterans and military spouses participating. Over 200 of them got jobs. We have also created a system to track job placements—an area where our nation has fallen woefully short in the past.

Establish support systems to drive success at 100 hiring fairs

We have enlisted high level public and private sector speakers to keynote our hiring fair events. To gain traction in the local communities, we also have an aggressive media and PR campaign, which has earned the attention of news outlets across the country. The Financial ran a piece featuring the Chicago hiring fair and our 100 city effort has been highlighted in USA Today, National Journal, Reuters, and McClatchy. NBC Universal has also agreed to cover all 100 of our hiring fairs utilizing their 212 local affiliate stations and to promote Hiring our Heroes on a nationally broadcast program called Making a Difference on the Homefront.

We’ve also included a video link to a news piece that we did to promote the hiring fair in Chicago and a video clip from Activision’s own Call of Duty Endowment which was the lead sponsor for Hiring our Heroes Chicago. The Chamber’s Hiring our Heroes program was recently highlighted in several media outlets as part of Joining Forces, a campaign backed by First Lady Michelle Obama, to educate, employ and mentor U.S. service members and their families. And we received extensive coverage in over 100 different media outlets for our hiring fairs on the USS Intrepid in New York City and at Sony Picture Studios in Los Angeles, where the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge participated.

Partners and Reach

Hiring our Heroes has already established partnerships with local and state Chambers of Commerce, DOL VETS, ESGR, and Veterans Services Organizations. By hosting 100 hiring fairs, we hope to connect 100,000 veterans and spouses with over 2,000 different employers. At our first 21 hiring fairs, we hosted over 20,000 veterans and brought in over 1000 different employers in 17 states.
