Chamber Celebrates Repeal of the Cook County Sales Tax
Chicagoland Chamber President and CEO Jerry Roper with officials from Cook County and business
associations speaking at the January 2 press conference.
On January 2, 2013 Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce President & CEO Jerry Roper gave the following remarks at a news conference for the reduction of the Cook County sales tax at Abt Electronics in Glenview, Illinois:
Good afternoon. I’m pleased to stand here today with President Preckwinkle, Commissioner Goslin, and our region’s business and community leaders to ring in the New Year by celebrating the total repeal of the one-percent sales tax increase adopted back in 2008. On behalf of the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce and businesses throughout Cook County, we commend the President and County Board for eliminating the remaining point-two-five-percent of the sales tax increase, saving consumers $87 Million this year. We’re grateful to President Preckwinkle for following through on her promise to roll back the tax increase, providing taxpayers this New Year’s gift by accelerating the scheduled repeal.
Over the last four years, Cook County businesses suffered by having among the highest sales tax rates in the Nation. Consumers travelled across County lines to avoid high taxes and purchase goods elsewhere. Repeal of the tax increase will help level the playing field, allowing Cook County businesses to compete more fairly once again.
Last year, President Preckwinkle and the County Board adopted a common-sense 2013 budget that proves once and for all that the sales tax increase was unnecessary and counter-productive. We urge our Federal and State government leaders to follow the County’s lead and seriously address the fiscal challenges we face in order to enhance our economic competitiveness and finally make Chicagoland the most business friendly region in America.
