It is in that spirit of volunteerism that the Chamber gives the Daniel H. Burnham award. The award is given in recognition of outstanding efforts and involvement in Chicago's business, cultural, educational and philanthropic communities. It recognizes true civic leadership within Chicagoland.
You may recall Daniel Burnham's famous words, "Make no small plans." If you have ever biked along Chicago's lakeshore, crossed the Michigan Avenue Bridge and walked down the "Magnificent Mile" or taken a ride on the "L", then you have been touched by Daniel Burnham's legacy.
Conceived by Burnham and first published in 1909 as the Plan of Chicago, the focus of his vast plan was to create a civic center where public and private business could be conducted among steel and stone palaces, making Chicago the business and cultural center of the Midwest.
The man had quite a vision for the future of Chicago and it is up to today's business leaders to do their civic duty and to build upon Burnham's foundation by continuing to make Chicago great.
